By investing in low-carbon solutions now, Japan can restrict those losses to only 1.6 percent by 2050. 53 Deliberate Leadership Because each Wicked Problem is unique, leaders must choose their approaches carefully. Should they command and control decisions when faced with a crisis? Should they draw on past experiences to manage the issue? When facing complex challenges, should they adopt a more collaborative and adaptive approach, adjusting strategies based on a clear-eyed understanding of what is and is not working? How do leaders hold onto their vision while setting aside preconceived notions, recognizing the strengths and limits of their expertise, and seeking solutions in unexpected places—including within the communities affected and across disciplines? Deliberate Leaders, as explored in the next chapter and the cases that follow, are leaders who act with intention and who accept not only the risk of the challenge ahead but also the consequences of their actions. If Wicked Problems were easy, they would have been solved. When dealing with the world’s most complex challenges, it’s a given that things will go wrong. What matters is the capacity for all involved to learn, adapt, and move forward.
