Building Japan’s Impact Economy Case Series

“We need to be bold.”

—Fumi Sugeno, SIIF Global

SIIF’s Perspective on What is Next? Sugeno says the Ten Years in the Making case series has influenced SIIF’s future direction in several ways. 12 SIIF is committed to driving collective action towards systems change. A goal is to demonstrate behavioral change models—answering the why and what to drive the how of change. SIIF will continue to focus on addressing inequality of opportunity, regional revitalization, and healthcare—aiming to promote systemic change in these areas. SIIF will also try to orchestrate collective movements towards system-level impact goals by collaborating with beneficiaries, nonprofits, and experts across multiple disciplines. For instance, SIIF is working with GSG Impact JAPAN to develop focus impact areas and deepen its understanding of systemic structures and leverage points to guide its actions. 13 SIIF is also committed to contributing to the continuous development of global IMM principles by sharing experiences and highlighting Japanese characteristics that may be relevant to other countries. Sugeno says, “The SIIF global collective movement will build on local, regional, national, Asia, and international experiences. In 2025, we are understanding the landscape of colleagues working on similar issues and find ways to create platforms in which we are all working together. Cooperation is essential.” 00 Sugeno also points to SIIF’s experiences working with A0 Group and Hataraku and Wellness funds as ways to learn and support continuous improvement in the context of systems change. The tagline for SIIF strategies is “Embracing Complexity and Taking Action: Taking on the Challenge of System Change for a Shared Society.” 14 Its website states, “We believe in initiating action to build a base for a society where resolution of social problems and creation of diverse value take place autonomously and sustainably. This is realized through our unique position and perspective as a foundation in this field, which allows us to work with a diverse array of players and stakeholders such as companies, local governments, NPOs, educational institutions, and research organizations.” There is an emphasis on transcending the conventional frameworks of self-help and public help, to mutual help.” 15
