n Stanford University School focuses on human-centered design programs—which are included in curricula in academic institutions worldwide. 86 Schools of Social Work in Japan and globally offer community engagement and design strategies. The International Journal of Community and Social Development was established in 2019 by Dr. Manohar Pawar, Professor of Social Work, Charles Sturt University, Australia, and President of the International Consortium for Social Development. Professor Hidenori Yamatani, who developed the University of Pittsburgh’s MBA-MSW dual degree program, says, “Corporations are centered on profit making ... It’s not that they are necessarily unethical ... they mean well. They just have not trained like social work students have in areas of social justice, individual rights, and utilitarian principles.” 87 Combining multidisciplinary knowledge on social development theory and practice and business savvy can lead to more effective social change. Several leaders in impact investing have social work degrees, including Ten Years in the Making case series co-author Gayle Peterson. Another example is Jed Emerson, social entrepreneur and founder of Blended Value. Emerson walks in a blended world that embraces the best of business and social change. Integration and collaboration across sectors will yield the most effective results. The New York University Stern School’s describes this process: “There is an idea that values are divided between financial and societal, but this is fundamentally the wrong way of how we view value. Value is whole. The world is not divided into corporate bad guys and social heroes.” 88 Figure D illustrates how these two approaches are used in sustainable finance.
