intended to build partnerships with local entrepreneurs and businesses who support systemic solutions to rural communities. The investment was made in Spring 2024 after a due diligence process including reviewing organizational financials and doing site visits. SIIF wanted to partner with A0 because of the CEO’s deep respect for nature and local community. In November 2024, when reviewing A0’s financials, SIIF staff discussed with A0 staff that several of A0 businesses were meeting or exceeding expectations, while the nature-based businesses were not thriving. Several of the businesses were operating in the red or breaking even. Given A0’s guiding philosophy and SIIF’s commitment to building a partnership, this case asks, “What would you do?” in these circumstances. This supplemental teaching guide provides greater financial context to address SIIF’s and A0’s community and investment concerns.
