Building Japan’s Impact Economy Case Series

When WF partnered with J-Pharma, it embraced a systems-thinking approach to impact due diligence. Together, they created a causal loop diagram to uncover the root challenges in cancer care and visualize the complex interplay between medical systems and patient experiences. Through this process, the team uncovered insights that extended far beyond the science of cancer—such as the devastating emotional impact of being told there are no remaining treatment options. The diagram also helped identify potential unintended consequences, a critical but often overlooked element in linear impact models. J-Pharma’s Causal Loop Diagram appears below in Figure H. The strength of it lies in how it was developed, through extensive interviews with patients, physicians, and community members. SIIFIC built a causal loop diagram that does not just capture surface-level issues but dives deep into the human experience within Japan’s healthcare system. Due to the nature of human interactions and experiences, the Causal Loop Diagram is multi-faceted, busy, and complex. Generally, it progresses left to right, moving from the development of treatments and diagnosing medical conditions to the lived experiences of patients, such as side effects and having a trusting relationship between physicians and patients.
